Greg Jackson on why there is a backlash against electric vehicles
Greg Jackson is the founder and CEO of Octopus Energy, a global energy and technology company headquartered in London.
Set up in 2016, it now has 7.7 million customers across 18 countries, as well as a portfolio of £7bn worth of renewable energy assets. The group’s proprietary technology platform, Kraken, is now used to run more than 54m customer accounts across the globe.
The company’s energy supplier arm recently became the largest in Great Britain, surpassing legacy giant British Gas when it added 1.3 million customers after buying Shell Energy in late 2023.
Jackson is a “serial tech entrepreneur”, having built and sold a number of start-ups before Octopus Energy.
Carbon Brief sat down with him for an hour, to discuss the UK’s energy transition, the upcoming general election, misinformation in the media and much more.

Cumulative CO2 emissions in 2021
Переглядів 17 тис.Рік тому
Fast-rising concentrations of carbon dioxide in the atmosphere are the main driver of human-caused global warming. Working out how to reduce these emissions is a cornerstone of international climate negotiations. However, unlike some other forms of pollution, this greenhouse gas is invisible to the human eye. This makes it harder to communicate the challenge of global warming to the public. But...

      Yes, it takes 31 to 46 trees to offset one ton of co2, so more trees is good. However in 2021 over 37 billion tons were released. I'll do the math for you, that's one trillion, one hundred and forty seven billion trees on the low end and one trillion, seven hundred and two billion on the high end. @@CitiesForTheFuture2030 Not anymore. China is quickly catching up to the US in cumulative emissions, and will surpass them in time. Indian emissions are also rising exponentially. The West HAS been reducing emissions, the US peaked in 2007, and Europe peaked way back in 1979. Don't forget that the West emitted so much CO2 because they created the industrial revolution (and had to invent cleaner methods over the course of a century) and were the original 'world factory,' making all the products used globally. The developing world has advantages the West never had. Cheap solar power running on proven technology. Cheap wind power. Established trade systems. Billions in aid.

    • @CitiesForTheFuture2030
      @CitiesForTheFuture2030 9 місяців тому

      @@Jake-rs9nq It's like 1 step forward, 2 steps back. Most of the G20 - the countries responsible for most emissions AND are wealthy enough to allow for the phasing out of fossil fuels - are still approving new oil & gas leases (US & UK & Oz, China & India still exploiting coal domestically), locking in emissions for many decades to come. TNCs are also exploiting reserves in developing countries who need to service their debts (so can't even use profits for a just transition!). It's all a big mess, isn't it?! On the bright side new energy tech - mainly solar - can reach rural areas (especially in Africa) where grids can't reach. I did see a WEF vid on wind energy in Africa - it can provide for all their needs 3 x over, altho solar is easier to install.

    • @freyfaust6218
      @freyfaust6218 5 місяців тому

      The cleanest energy is what puts out the most power per unit. The more area is needed to produce energy, the dirtier and more environmentally destructive it is. Solar panels and electricity producing windmills are extremely dirty because: the metals needed must be mined, and the raw materials for the polymers must be transported and worked into the necessary composites and shapes. The frames and boxes for solar are steel and glass. The foundations for windmills are made of tons of concrete and rebar. Cables and power stations and batteries all need materials and all wear out and must be maintained and eventually replaced. There is no way to recycle composites. Dumps take space, and composites are toxic. Coal and quarz must be boiled together for days to make the voltaic tiles. Thousands of km of wildlands must be cleared, dynamited, and dug out for the installations, depriving wildlife of their habitats. Lithium is retrieved mainly from Africa, and that means profitting from slave labor. Be careful what you wish for.

    Climate change is a cyclical phenomenon driven by forces beyond human control, including the sun's activity & the Earth's magnetosphere, orbit & precession. We are currently in an interglacial warm period. Sea level rises are mitigated by isostatic rebalancing, ocean basin expansion into the upper mantle, compression of fluid at the bottom of ocean water columns & a 9% reduction in water volume as its state changes from ice to liquid. CO2 is essential for photosynthesis & therefore at the root of the food chain. If we reduce CO2 below 80ppm, all plant life will die & the food chain will collapse. CO2 is currently at a 550 million year low at ~400ppm, 5% of what it was in the Cambrian period, based on atmospheric ice core sample analysis. CO2 emissions are good for the environment. Without CO2 there is no photosynthesis, no food chain and no life. "Green" produces a dead planet. "Climate change" is astrophysics driven. The "Green" agenda is primarily about controlling the human population by inducing crop yield reduction via CO2 starvation and implementing artificial scarcity systems. It's also a system of societal control and a way for crony capitalists to steal from taxpayers.
